There are so many possibilites for the application of virtual reality technologies in the nuclear industry - with much focus in recent years directed at developing training methods incorporating virtual reality.

The UK-based energy company Sellafield, a Subsidery of the UK Nuclear Decomissioning Authority managing the decomissioning of the Sellafield NPP in Northern England, are collaborating with the Virtual Engineering Centre from the University of Liverpool to develop tools using virtual reality to train operators of the waste removal crane in the decomissioning process.

The technology involves a replica of the operator's chair, control joystick, and spatial work environment of the decomissioing crane, and will allow specialist operators to practice 'driving' the crane before the launch of the full-scale training programme.

Read Power Technology's interview with Sarah Martin-Tyrell - senior marketing manager of Virtual Engineering Centre - about the technology and the collaboration.
