Technical Tours of Fukushima Daiichi and Daini

Some of the reactors at Fukushima Daiichi NPP were irreparably damaged during a magnitude 6.9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2011. The decision to decommission the plant was taken – the process of which will take 30-40 years.  Fukushima Daini NPP is the ‘little sister’ NPP of Daiichi, 12 km to the south and generating electricity since 1981. A decision to decommission this plant was made in 2019.

The Summer Institute 2020 will be held in Japan, and will feature a unique set of cutting-edge technical tours, touching on various elements of the nuclear life-cycle. We are delighted to reveal that the 2020 programme will feature technical tours of Fukushima Daiichi and Daini NPPs in collaboration with TEPCO. This is a fantastic opportunity for participants to experience the front-lines of decommissioning work. The technical tours will provide insight into emergency response and the decommissioning process. It is truly a remarkable chance for the future leaders of the nuclear industry who attend the Summer Institute to expand their knowledge of this area.
