Agneta Rising, Director-General of World Nuclear Association and President of World Nuclear University, recently published a viewpoint article in World Nuclear News which looked back on a dynamic 2019 in the nuclear industry and looked forward to a 2020 where 15 reactors are due to be connected to the grid - a total not matched in 30 years.

Since the publication of IPCC Global Warming of 1.5°C report of 2018, several landmark reports by non-nuclear expert bodies such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the World Energy Council (WEC) have recognized the need for a significant share of nuclear generation to be included in the international energy mix. This demonstrates the converging attitude of experts that nuclear is an essential aspect of a clean energy system. This is echoed by certain governments, such as Australia, reconsidering their position on nuclear energy and by the European Parliament embracing the role of nuclear as means to achieve ambitious climate targets.

"As we enter a new decade we must put nuclear at the core of our clean energy future."
