Overview

The WNU School on Radiation Technologies (RT School) is a two-week intensive leadership and communication development programme aimed at future leaders in the radiation and radioisotope field. The programme will emphasize breadth of understanding to ensure that future leaders are able to eliminate siloed thinking and explore how the many and varied elements of the industry will impact on our future. It is open to companies, governments, research institutions and regulatory authorities expected to play key roles in the field.

The 2023 School on Radiation Technologies will be held in-person, in Pretoria, South Africa, taking full advantage of the inclusive, global nature of in-person programmes.

Objectives

The programme aims to:

  • Provide participants with broad understanding and new horizons in the area of radioisotopes and radiation technologies
  • Familiarize participants with the main issues encountered by practitioners in the field
  • Provide opportunities for participants to develop a worldwide network of contacts of unique value to their current and long-term careers
  • Help understand prospects and challenges in the radiation technologies field through technical tour visits of global vanguard facilities
  • Enforce mentorship and group work, focusing on fostering innovation, leadership and communication skills

Curriculum

The programme has been developed in consultation with an expert Programme Committee to encompass a variety of activities:  

  • Expert-led technical tours of global vanguard facilities
  • Dedicated mentorship and working groups focusing on fostering innovation, leadership and communication skills
  • Presentations by foremost industry leaders
  • Extensive structured networking opportunities
  • Lectures by prominent experts in radioisotopes and radiation technologies

The curriculum ranges across a wide spectrum of topics relevant to radiation technologies, covering:   

  • Operations and Regulatory Frameworks, including sources of radiation, radiological protection, production of radioisotopes and sealed sources, quality assurance and control, safety and security, packaging and transport of radioactive material, waste management and decommissioning, economics of RT programmes, and communications.  
  • Current and future applications, including nuclear techniques in food and agriculture, human health, industrial process management, environmental protection, and life sciences. 

Requirements

  • University degree or equivalent operational experience;     
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of radiation technologies applied in medical, industrial, and other applications;    
  • Demonstrated academic or professional excellence, with 2 reference letters (English preferred);    
  • Proficiency in English, particularly oral communication, which is essential for effective participation in WNU programmes. Non-native English speaker will be asked to submit an English language certificate to demonstrate their language skills.  WNU may also request an online interview to ensure English proficiency in a virtual environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional work experience in nuclear science.

Participation fees for this event:

  • IAEA TC-funded applications – £5,500
  • All other applications - £6,500
