World Nuclear University 2005 Summer Institute
Lectures on Nuclear Leadership

An important component of the WNU 2005 Summer Institute is a series of special presentations by leaders and pioneers in areas related to Nuclear Science and Technology. These Lectures on Nuclear Leadership will feature internationally known individuals who have made significant contributions to the history, politics and uses of nuclear science and technology. Most of their presentations are scheduled late in the afternoon and will be open to the public.

The programs, expected to last about an hour in total, will feature:

  • A presentation lasting about 35 to 45 minutes.
  • A question and answer component lasting an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
  • An informal reception at the conclusion of the program (to which all audience members will be invited) that will provide an opportunity for additional interaction between the presenter and audience members.

During the presentation, audience members will have an opportunity to write down and submit questions for the presenter. The moderator will read a representative selection of the submitted questions to the presenter for his or her response during the Q and A component of the programme.

Later in the evening there will be an opportunity for further less structured discussion between the presenter and the fellows, mentors and faculty of the Institute. This informal session will not be open to the public.

In preparing their presentations, lecturers have been offered wide latitude but are encouraged to cover both (a) personal experiences and lessons learned in the nuclear field; and (b) issues and challenges they foresee for future nuclear leaders.

The aim of the Lecture series is to provide:

  • Vivid insight about notable careers in the nuclear field
  • Realistic perspective on the challenges facing those engaged in applying and advancing the valuable uses of nuclear technology
  • Appreciation - by way of personal example - for the capacity of dedicated individuals to make a substantial difference in our world through a career in the nuclear profession.
